Rick joined the Miller School of Albemarle in 2000, having worked at two other Virginia independent schools for a total of 31 years. During his career, Rick has taught mostly French and Spanish along with an occasional class of history or English. He coached for most of those years, cross country being his preferred sport, with soccer, basketball, football, and track & field holding special memories. In addition to teaching and coaching, Rick has served as an administrator in each school: the Academic Director and Director of both Middle and Upper Schools.  As President and Headmaster of MSA, Rick enjoys maintaining the momentum of a school on the move and planning for its next 100 years.

Rick originally hails from upstate New York, although he has spent most of his life in Virginia. He completed undergraduate work at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, earned an M.A. at Middlebury College in Vermont, and completed advanced studies programs at the Université d'Avignon in France and the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia.

The best part of Rick's day occurs in the classroom with students, although a close second is working with teachers. His dominating thought is that good schools are composed of good people, like we have at MSA.

In his spare time Rick enjoys running, reading, and music. He and his wife, Sandy, reside both on campus and in Charlottesville. Sandy graduated from Longwood College and is a native of central Virginia.
