Mary Jo joined the Miller School of Albemarle in August 2004. Prior to her arrival at MSA, Mary Jo worked in part-time positions as a Latin tutor at Champion Tutoring in Charlottesville, VA, and at Woodberry Forest School. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Union College, receiving a BA in Classics in 1990. Mary Jo continued her study of Classics at the University of Virginia, receiving a MA in Latin in 1992. She did additional graduate work in Classics at the University at the Ph.D. level. Mary Jo has presented papers on Roman authors including Catullus, Livy and Menander at meetings of the Classical Association of the Midwest and South.
In addition to teaching Latin, Mary Jo serves a faculty advisor to the National Honor Society at MSA, in which capacity she oversees the school's Peer Tutoring program. Along with her colleague, Michael Dalton, Mary Jo serves as a faculty sponsor for the Senior Class. In addition, she is one of the faculty members of the Honor Committee. In her free time, Mary Jo does volunteer work for her alma mater, Union College, in the role of class columnist and Annual Fund class agent. She is actively involved with her church and as a parent volunteer at Burley Middle School.
A transplant to Virginia from Albany, New York, Mary Jo is a die-hard New York Yankees fan who also roots for the UVa Cavaliers. Other pastimes include traveling, spending time with family and friends, and reading.
Aiden Burke, Mary Jo's husband, is network administrator at Klockner Pentaplast. The Burkes have two children, Patrick and Brendan.
