Miller School of Albemarle students who are interested in a career in education gain first-hand experience in an elementary school classroom by working in this service group. The group also provides MSA students an excellent opportunity to be a role model for younger children, many of whom come from difficulty family situations. Each student volunteer is assigned to an individual classroom to assist the teacher and the students in that class. Often, the MSA student is paired one-on-one with a child who needs individual attention. Sometimes our students will work with small groups on a class assignment.
Michele De Gallo, Principal of Agnor-Hurt Elementary School, praises the MSA student volunteers: "My students from Crozet Elementary and Agnor-Hurt Elementary have had the unique experience of having the Miller School students mentor them for the last 10 years. The Miller School students have been positive role models to the younger generation of Albemarle County. They have created meaningful relationships that have had a lasting positive impact on our students. It only takes one meaningful relationship for a child to succeed in school against all odds. The Miller School Service Program helps provide those special relationships for many children in Albemarle County. Thank you for being such a great support to our schools."
